What is Software as a Medical Device (SaMD)?
The International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) defines Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) as software intended for medical purposes without being part of a hardware medical device. As Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) technology advances, ensuring patient safety and efficacy is crucial. Global regulatory bodies like the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF), US FDA, EU, and other bodies have established frameworks to govern SaMD, with each country having its own specific regulations. These bodies provide harmonized principles for global regulation, classify SaMD based on risk, and require pre-market approval for higher-risk devices.
Examples of SaMD include:
- Mobile apps that track a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, or glucose levels
- Software that analyzes medical images such as X-rays or MRIs to help diagnose diseases
- Software that controls infusion pumps or other medical devices
- Software that provides decision support to clinicians
- Software that allows patients to monitor their own health and communicate with doctors
